Operational Planning Consultant - Rail

TGSR has partnered with a global business consulting firm, in search for an Operational Planning Consultant - Rail specialist, to work on a variety of rail projects. My client provides strategic, commercial, and technical advice to clients in the areas of passenger and freight rail and covering all its life-cycle phases.



Location: The ideal candidate will be based in Central London.



Salary is negotiable and dependent on experience.



Person Specification – Essential

  • A solid understanding of and practical knowledge of the rail industry operational planning techniques which includes a detailed knowledge of at least two of timetable planning, rolling stock diagramming, train crew diagramming, train crew rostering and performance simulation
  • Prior experience in undertaking capacity assessments and analysis
  • Good knowledge of how operational planning fits within the wider railway industry
  • Hands on experience in the use of at least two of the following rail industry operational planning packages: TPS; Railsys; Voyagerplan; Tracs-RS; Open Track; and Traintracs
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the GB rail network which includes a detailed technical knowledge of the characteristics of at least one of Network Rail’s Routes
  • A highly proficient user of spreadsheets
  • Must have some experience providing high quality technical reports for clients from the public and/or private sector
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team, sharing ideas and expertise to support continuous learning and improvement with team members



Qualifications – Desirable

  • Institution of Railway Operators (MIRO), Membership
  • A good understanding of rail industry cost drivers
  • Knowledge of and preferably, experience in running MOIRA
  • A background in undertaking performance modeling
  • A sound understanding of the fundamentals of track layout design combined with signaling principles
  • Previous experience in leading technical work streams or project management with a large technical component
  • Some background in providing analytical support in rail business models; including crowding, operating costs, performance and business case




  • Function as a technical support on major projects and lead on operational planning workstreams in small to medium sized projects
  • Produce technical reports for clients both public and private
  • Serve as a technical supervisor or guide to staff
  • Be able to attend client meetings and participate in work presentations
  • Actively seek to develop skills both on the job and from formal training with a view to sharing knowledge with colleagues
  • Will assist in bids presentation and marketing
